My Daredevil Review

Here's my 2-cents worth of comments after reading a few of my frens' comments on the show.

Well, first of all, it's a fan-boy, geek movie, that's for certain. It adheres pretty strictly with the comic with a slight change to the origin where Matt Murdock was blinded as a young boy when a truck containing, what else, radioactive waste overturned and spilled onto his eyes while he was saving an old man from being knocked down by the very same truck. Yeah, I know, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles copied that. Secondly, he was taunted as a kid when he was young and given the nickname, "Daredevil". Hence, that's where the moniker came from. Anyway, I've always thought of Daredevil as a poor man's Spiderman with the origin of Batman thrown in.

As for the plot, as what my friend, Kelvin said, it's rather convoluted in a way. But hey, it's a superhero movie. What did you expect? However, I thought it was definitely different from the other superhero movies in the treatment of the villians in the end. They didn't friggin' die !! Amazing!!! Alright, okay, Magneto walked away unscathed and so did Lex Luthor in the Christopher Reeves series. But hey, look at what happened to the Joker and Green Goblin. Well, Bullseye did kill Elektra in the comics. However, she was resuurected due to her immense popularity with the pre-pubescent crowd. So expect her to return in the sequel (yes, it's already in the works) as well. But hey, this time, Jennifer Garner will be decked out in red leather (yup, just like Ben Affleck) with a red bandana to boot. So, for you guys out there, with a fetish for red leather and bandana, get ready to cream in 2 years time. Overall, I'd say it was pretty decent but nothing that pumps up the blood, except for the concluding 20 minutes which got pretty intense. However, the soundtrack sucked goats' balls with waaaayyyy too many "alternative-rock", "nu-metal" tunes hogging the background.

Personally, I thought Ben Affleck did a great job as both Matt Murdock and Daredevil. He had both looks pat down so in a way, I disagreed with Roy's review. You don't have to be superbuff to be a superhero. Look at Micheal Keaton. He just looked psycho, though not as much as Jack Nicholson did. But seriously, who will dress up in tights to fight crime unless they have some serious issues. The costume was great. Couldn't find fault with it, unlike Spiderman's rectangular webbing on the body. The leather and sculpted muscles ala Batman was a nice touch and it kept to the original design, in fact, enhancing the original design. Affleck is known to do some good acting, once in a while. Being a major fan of Daredevil himself, he definitely put in major work into this. You can tell his passion for the material in the movie.

I'm not a fan of Jennifer Gardner and I don't watch Alias (most of the time) as well. Though she can have her moments of immense beauty, she looks like a simian to me the bulk of the time. I've to fight the urge of jumping on her and picking at her hair to pick for fleas and munch 'em. Nah,she has lovely hair. I give her that. Though I guess when she was cast, it wasn't expected much of her to act anything beyond what she does on the small screen. Well, not that it was that much of a stretch for her anyway. Well, at first, I thought Jessica Alba might be a better choice (she's hot and not as expensive as Gardner) but well, she looked fierce in her role and doesn't suck. So, that's alright.

What can I say about Micheal Clarke Duncan? Find me a white dude with the very same imposing demeanor and that bloody voice.... Though the Kingpin was supposed to be a white dude. What more can I say? I was sold when they casted him back in June last year!!!

Colin Farrell has the shit-hot potential of Ewan McGregor and Bencio Del Toro combined!!! The fucker has been putting amazing works for his last few shows. Seriously, if Tom Cruise wasn't given his obligatory screen time in "Minority Report", Farrell would have stolen the whole friggin' show. Loved his portrayal of Bullseye which, in the comics, was an utterly campy supervillian to me. In the movie, he manages to balance the right amount of camp and utter menace in his performance which was obviously over-the-top in a good way. One film I'm looking for to catch, besides all the superhero movies (inclusive of the Matrix sequels, what men in tight leather and trenchcoats not superhero enough for you?) will be his "Phone Booth". It sounds like a movie with a Hitchcockian premise. Fuckin' interesting cuz the whole bloody movie takes place in, well, a phone booth. However, it might suck just because Joel Schmacher is directing it. I'm keeping my mind open for this.
